Where Do You Start? Taking the First Step

Hello, Educational Leaders! We hope this edition finds you well and energized. Spring is a season of growth and transformation, and what better time to take the first steps toward breakthrough success in your school? In our last newsletter, we explored the importance of strategy and how it bridges Priority Objectives with high-impact execution. Now, the focus shifts to taking the next action that will turn the plan into tangible results.

At Educentric, we define First Steps as the immediate, purposeful actions taken to implement a tactic. You have set your objectives, crafted your strategies, and outlined specific tactics; now what? It’s time to move forward! A well-crafted strategy is only as effective as the actions that bring it to life.

Before you do anything else, you need to take note of how important it is to start immediately after the action plan is created. In your school, enthusiasm for a new implementation can be high, but daily demands and other factors can often cause good intentions to fade. A well-structured plan means little if it isn’t acted upon quickly. Taking immediate action is crucial for you to gain momentum and prevent inertia. Mind you, this is not too hard to do when partnered with an Educentric Navigator who knows what and when to do!

What could the First Steps Look Like? What Are Examples?

Let’s go back a little bit on our previous edition. The xxx School District’s Priority Objective was to build a solid academic base so that students are prepared to meet the demands of a healthcare professional's high school. They then set a strong strategy, which is to establish a rigorous and comprehensive STEM curriculum across four core areas—math, science, social studies, and language arts. Then, they planned a set of high-impact tactics.

Now comes the critical moment—taking the First Steps. Instead of getting overwhelmed by the bigger picture, the district broke down its First Steps into clear, actionable moves:

What do you notice on the first steps here for every tactic?

The First Steps were simple, clear, and straightforward. They complement the tactics by ensuring that actions are immediately applicable, easy to understand, and directly aligned with the overall strategy.

What to Avoid in Planning the First Steps

  1. Avoid Overcomplicating the First Steps. The First Steps should be simple and achievable. If they are too broad or complex, teams may struggle to get started. Keep them focused on the tactics that you’ve set.

  2. Avoid Lack of Clear Ownership. Ensure each step has a responsible person or team assigned to carry it out.

  3. Avoid Delaying Execution. To reiterate this, the First Steps should be executed as soon as possible to keep progress moving forward.

Every school’s journey is unique, but success always begins with the right First Steps. If you’re ready to move from planning to action, Educentric is here to help. Understanding what needs to happen is one thing—knowing how to start is another. Educentric is ready to step in and help guide your schools to achieve a breakthrough.
