Welcome back, Educational Leaders!
The summer season is winding down, and we hope you have had the chance to recharge, reflect, and find inspiration for the year ahead. As campuses begin to buzz with life again, we know your minds are already on how to create a meaningful impact, and we’re right here with you. At Educentric, we’re kicking off the new school year with a powerful reminder: success doesn’t just happen. It should be monitored, measured, and intentionally pursued.

You might be wondering: Isn’t progress monitoring just another way of saying “monitor progress”?
Well, yes… and no. While the terms sound similar, progress monitoring, as we define it at Educentric, is much more strategic than simply tracking data or checking off goals. Progress monitoring is one of Educentric's core processes to achieve a school’s breakthrough. We use two types of metrics to track the performance of a school’s Priority Objective (PO).
To recap, a Priority Objective is a broad action the school will take to help achieve its North Star Metric (NSM) and Value Proposition (VP). It often takes multiple objectives to reach the NSM and VP, but the most critical and urgent ones are identified as Priority Objectives. These are the actions that deserve the closest attention and the most thoughtful measurement.
These two metrics are what we refer to as Key Progress Indicators (KPIs) and Key Results (KRs). Each Priority Objective must be monitored in two ways: while it’s happening and after it’s complete. The KPI is your early signal—a formative, ongoing measure that’s tracked frequently (daily, weekly, monthly). It provides real-time insight into whether your team is gaining traction, helping you make timely course corrections. KPIs act as leading indicators that predict whether you're on the path to success. The KR, on the other hand, is your final verdict—a summative measure that tells you whether the objective achieved its intended result once completed.
Let’s take a look at a straightforward step-by-step guide on how to develop Key Progress Indicators and Key Results, then let’s work on filling it in using an example.
Step 1: Select your Priority Objective.
Step 2: Determine a measure that will be tracked at least annually to determine if your school is making progress toward that Priority Objective. This will be your Key Result. Ensure the Key Result is aligned directly with the North Star Metric.
Step 3: Consider data that can be collected weekly or biweekly to track progress toward the Key Result. In essence, this data will serve as progress monitoring toward your Key Results, which will become your Key Progress Indicators.
These measures will give you a tangible way to track progress toward your objectives. Your objectives drive what you achieve, and your Key Results measure if you accomplish that objective, and Key Progress Indicators measure in real time the amount of progress you make toward that Key Result.
We hope this is making sense so far. Let’s dig deeper…
Example
Priority Objective: Increase student achievement in Math for 3rd-5th graders.
Key Result: Student achievement on the Math STAAR assessment for 3rd-5th grade will increase from 67% to 81% passing (meeting Approaches Grade Level)
Key Progress Indicators
#1. Percentage of students scoring at least 70% on bi-weekly Math Common Formative Assessments (CFAs)
#2. Percentage of students showing growth on monthly math intervention progress monitoring tools
#3. Percentage of standards mastered on weekly exit tickets or quick checks aligned to STAAR readiness standards
Explanation
The Priority Objective focuses on increasing student achievement in Math for 3rd–5th graders, which is a critical, high-leverage goal. The Key Result then defines success in concrete terms: raising the STAAR passing rate from 67% to 81%, which provides a clear summative measure of impact. The selected KPIs serve as real-time, formative indicators that help track progress toward that outcome. Bi-weekly CFAs reflect how well students are mastering current instruction, monthly intervention data shows whether supports are effective for struggling learners, and weekly exit tickets measure day-to-day understanding of key standards.
Together, these KPIs provide actionable insights that enable educators to adjust instruction and support students proactively, increasing the likelihood that the Priority Objective and ultimately, the Key Result, will be achieved.
