Hi, Educational Leaders!
As January comes to a close, we hope the year is off to a strong and productive start for you!
With the year well underway, it's the perfect time to refocus on the fundamentals that shape school performance. In this edition of the Educentric Newsletter, we’re revisiting a critical foundation: Key Progress Indicators (KPIs) and Key Results (KRs). What’s the difference? How do they work together? What’s the difference? How do they work together? Let’s dive in…

Why Metrics Matter in Schools
Imagine this: A school struggling to improve math scores decides to implement a simple strategy. They define clear milestones to track progress and set a bold goal: raise test scores by 20% in one year. By focusing on measurable steps, they achieve their target and probably even more.
This success wasn't magic. It was metrics. The hallmark of achieving any goal is being able to quantify your success. You can’t quantify your success if you don’t set specific numerical targets. This is the only way you know how you get from your starting point to your desired point.
Metrics are quantifiable measurements used to assess performance, track progress, and measure the success of various processes, initiatives, or entities. They provide objective and tangible data that allows organizations to make informed decisions, identify improvement areas, and monitor strategies' effectiveness.
Educentric’s School Breakthrough Performance Model (SBPM) has two types of metrics that it uses to track the performance of Priority Objectives (POs). One metric is an ongoing, formative measure that helps inform and monitor the progress of an objective. This is called the Key Progress Indicator (KPI). The other metric is an end result, a summative measure that helps determine if the objective was met called the Key Result (KR).
Why Do We Need Key Progress Indicators and Key Results For Priority Objectives?
Priority Objective (PO)
A Priority Objective is an objective of a broad action that the school will take in order to help it achieve its North Star Metric and Value Proposition. It will take multiple objectives to achieve the NSM and VP, and the critical and most pressing objectives that you tackle first are called Priority Objectives. Each Priority Objective needs to be measured to determine two things: 1) if it is being successful while carrying out the objective, and 2) if it has been successful once the objective has been completed.
Example:
PO1: Increase student achievement in Math for 3rd-5th graders
Key Result (KR)
Each Priority Objective needs to have one Key Result that is connected to it. This Key Result is the desired outcome or target that is measured quantifiably. It is the end result you want to see. Usually, Key Results are measured within one academic year, so they are measured annually. A Key Result is an Iagging indicator because it is a data point that measures past or current results and performance.
Example:
Student achievement on the Math STAAR assessment for 3rd-5th grade will increase from 67% to 81% passing (meeting Approaches Grade Level)
Key Progress Indicator(s) (KPIs)
Each Priority Objective and Key Result should also have one or more Key Progress Indicators. Key Progress Indicators are your benchmarks that help to inform your progress toward achieving the Key Result. They are leading indicators because they can help inform how you are progressing on an objective. Key Progress Indicators should help predict performance on the Key Result. They should be measured either daily, weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, or quarterly. You should be able to collect and monitor progress on an Objective toward a Key Result multiple times throughout the year to monitor and track performance.
Example:
Eighty percent of students in grades 3rd-5th will have mastered at least 80% of the standards on every Math Unit test.
Here is another example of how the Priority Objective is connected to a Key Result and Key Progress Indicators.

Here is an example of how you can use Key Progress Indicators and Key Results to monitor and determine the success of a Priority Objective.

Your Checklist for Implementing Metrics
Define a clear Priority Objective/s aligned with your school’s North Star Metric.
Set Key Results- specific, measurable goals to achieve annually.
Identify Key Progress Indicators to monitor frequently.
Review data regularly to ensure alignment with goals.
At Educentric, we have mastered the intricate relationship between Priority Objectives (POs), Key Progress Indicators (KPIs), and Key Results (KRs). Our proven framework is designed to seamlessly integrate these elements to drive measurable success for schools. Backed by a team of experts in the field, we provide the guidance, tools, and insights needed to implement this framework effectively.
Whether you're just beginning to explore this approach or looking to refine your existing processes, Educentric is here to help you every step of the way. Together, we can ensure that your school not only sets bold goals but achieves them with confidence and clarity.
