Hello, Educational Leaders!

Welcome to the very first issue of the Educentric newsletter! This newsletter is dedicated to the discussion of topics around achieving school and student success. Every other week, we will send out a newsletter focused on educational productivity and performance.

For this very first newsletter, we are centering the discussion on the topic of identifying and using a North Star Metric to define and benchmark progress towards your schools' primary goals and objectives.

What is a North Star Metric?

At its core, the North Star Metric (NSM) is a single, overarching metric that encapsulates the core value your organization delivers to its stakeholders. Companies like Spotify, Airbnb, and Dropbox have used it to achieve remarkable growth. In the context of education, NSM serves as a leading indicator that helps schools determine whether or not they have achieved the defined value proposition or unique attribute for which the school wants to be known.

Benefits of Finding the North Star Metric for Your School

  1. Clarity and Focus: The use of NSM provides a clear and singular focus for the school's efforts, ensuring that all activities contribute to a common goal. The NSM is contrary to a school improvement plan where more often than not the plan addresses everything all the while focusing on nothing. The North Star Metric ensures a laser-like focus on a school’s most important goal.

  2. Alignment: With the NSM in place, stakeholders from different departments will foster collaboration. This will help the teams prioritize the features, experiences, etc., that matter most in accordance with the metric. When everyone understands and rallies around the North Star Metric, it becomes a shared language that bridges gaps and ensures coherence in educational efforts.

  3. Focus on Impact and Breakthrough Strategies: Schools can use the North Star Metric to guide their actions toward breakthrough outcomes. Through NSM, the school can enhance productivity through increased efficiency and effectiveness, thereby enhancing learning experiences for all students.

Your North Star Metric is Effective if it is:

  • Is a single indicator that shows progress toward your school’s long-term success.

  • Is measurable and easy to track. You should be able to quantify it precisely.

  • Is within your control. You should have the ability to influence its outcome.

  • Will impact all the departments and stakeholders within the school.

North Star Metric in Business

Before being embraced by educational institutions, the concept of NSM is mainly used by leading businesses. Here are some of the NSMs from many successful corporations.

So how can you start to identify your NSM? Read below to find out how.

How Educentric Can Help You Identify Your North Star Metric

Educentric employs a structured process to help schools identify their NSM. In just three key areas, your school will have its own NSM that will kickstart your success.

  • 2-Day Intensive Workshop

    • Educentric conducts a two-day workshop involving key stakeholders frothe school

    • Participants learn how to effectively use the NSM framework to drive breakthrough performance within their school.

  • Data and Insights

    • During the workshop, participants are provided with several years of the school’s key performance data.

    • Additionally, results from Educentric’s survey of parents and teachers are shared to help schools identify their value proposition.

    • These insights also help schools develop the 3-4 big levers and objectives that will help them achieve their value proposition and NSM

  • Goal Setting

    • The school team collaboratively establishes a long-term goal for the chosen measure.

    • This goal is directly connected to the school’s North Star Metric (NSM).

    • For instance, if a school prioritizes improving its Graduation Rate, and the past year’s rate was 84 percent, it aims to move from its Current State of 84 percent to a goal of 95 percent. The 95 percent target becomes its NSM.

In summary, the North Star Framework acts as a recipe for breakthrough school improvement, providing a structured approach to elevate educational outcomes. It not only provides a clear direction but also acknowledges the importance of overcoming obstacles on the path to educational excellence.
