Happy Thurs-yay, Educational Leaders!

If you’re still reading this newsletter, you are a rockstar! Your commitment to making meaningful strides toward your school’s success is truly commendable. Every piece of Educentric content is carefully crafted to provide you with valuable insights, proven methodologies, and the inspiration to take that decisive action.

Now, what do we talk about today? In our previous newsletter, we tackled two different types of change methods. Did one of the methods resonate with your school's needs, or were you waiting for this issue to discover the power of Breakthrough Change?

Breakthrough Change Defined

In business, a breakthrough change is one that takes your organization to the next level to improve culture, increase profit, get out of debt, or create teams that perform optimally to improve business results while decreasing breakdowns.

The difference between continuous improvement and breakthrough change can be compared to a caterpillar growing larger versus becoming a butterfly. Continuous improvement focuses on refining existing methods and practices within the organization, such as enhancing communication systems, upgrading technology, or streamlining processes. While essential, continuous improvement alone won’t lead to the significant leaps needed to achieve substantial profit increases or a dramatically better culture. To achieve that level of progress, a breakthrough change is required.

At Educentric, we’ve redefined how schools approach growth by blending the best aspects of continuous improvement with transformational shifts, resulting in the superior and impactful Breakthrough Change methodology. But how does this approach stack up against traditional school improvement plans? Let’s explore why Educentric’s breakthrough change strategy is a step above the rest.

Breakthrough vs. Traditional School Improvement

Traditional school improvement plans often rely on numerous goals with no clear focus, leaving schools overwhelmed with targets that lack prioritization. In contrast, Educentric’s Breakthrough Change emphasizes a single, critical measure of success—the North Star Metric. By honing in on what truly matters, schools can channel their efforts and resources toward impactful outcomes to ensure measurable success without getting lost in a sea of goals.

Engagement is key to any successful initiative. Traditional plans tend to involve limited stakeholder participation, which can result in a lack of buy-in. Educentric collaborates by engaging teachers, parents, and the broader school community through focus groups and surveys. This inclusion boosts morale and ensures that improvement efforts are sustainable and widely supported.

One of the most significant advantages of Breakthrough Change is its ability to provide customized solutions. Traditional plans often use standardized metrics that may not fit a school’s unique needs. Educentric works directly with schools to define their own North Star Metric based on specific challenges and contexts, ensuring that strategies are both relevant and effective.

How Does Educentric Implement and Achieve Breakthrough?

Educentric helps schools achieve breakthrough performance by focusing on one key measure of success. Here’s a sneak peek of the steps we will take to set up a school for success.

  1. District Chooses Schools: The district selects schools to participate.

  2. School Breakthrough Team (SBT): Each school forms a team of key influencers, including the principal, teachers, and parents, to lead the improvement process.

  3. Surveys and Focus Groups: Parents and Staff (instructional and non-instructional) provide feedback through surveys and focus groups to identify strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement.

  4. Data Analysis: Educentric analyzes the feedback and provides a report with recommendations to the superintendent and the school’s SBT.

  5. Two-Day Training: Educentric trains the SBT on key concepts, including:

    • Value Proposition: What makes the school unique?

    • North Star Metric (NSM): The school’s single most important measure of success (e.g., percentage of students reading at grade level).

    • Strategies and Tactics: Actions to overcome barriers and achieve the NSM.

  6. Creating the School Breakthrough Flight Plan: The SBT develops a concise, two-page plan focusing on strategies and tactics to remove obstacles preventing progress toward the NSM.

  7. Budget Alignment: The school redirects funds where necessary to ensure that its budget supports the breakthrough plan’s strategies and tactics.

  8. Progress Monitoring: Weekly progress checks are implemented to ensure continuous improvement and adjustment as needed.

  9. Support and Tools: Educentric provides schools with tools for tracking performance, a chat platform for collaboration, and a school improvement coach for weekly support.

The Role of Leadership in Breakthrough Change

We also just wanted to highlight how leadership plays a pivotal role in the success of this Breakthrough Change methodology. Effective leaders are not just managers; they are visionaries who set clear, high-impact goals through the North Star Metric (NSM) and ensure that every initiative aligns with this focused objective. When you foster a collaborative culture, school leaders engage teachers, parents, and other stakeholders in the whole process, creating buy-in and shared responsibility. They empower the School Breakthrough Team (SBT) to take charge of executing strategies and tactics while providing the necessary resources and motivation to overcome obstacles and maintain progress.
