Follow the Yellow Brick Road with Strategies and Tactics

Happy Holidays, Educational Leaders! As we approach the end of December, we can hardly believe this is our final newsletter edition of the year—what an incredible journey it has been with you. Throughout 2025, your messages, reflections, and reactions have deeply inspired us; hearing how these newsletters spark curiosity, generate meaningful conversations, and ignite bold ideas within your schools has been one of the greatest highlights of our work.

We wanted to end this year strong, and as a gift to you, today’s edition speaks in a language of familiarity. Something most of us have heard, a story that has guided generations and continues to hold lessons for leaders. “Follow the Yellow Brick Road,” but with Strategies and Tactics. Using this timeless metaphor to reflect on the path your school is walking, the clarity of direction you’ve set, and the intentional steps that will determine your success in the year ahead.

More Than A Movie

For many of us, The Wizard of Oz was a childhood comfort movie—one we watched for the magic, the songs, the colorful characters, and the simple joy of seeing Dorothy and her friends follow the Yellow Brick Road toward something better. Back then, it felt like just a whimsical adventure. Yet, as adults, and especially as leaders in the educational sector, we begin to see the empowering message behind it: a young girl searching for direction, navigating uncertainty, relying on the strengths of those around her, and learning that the key to her success was clarity, courage, heart, and consistency.

The story follows Dorothy as she’s swept away from the familiar into the unknown land of Oz. All companions who joined her on the journey to the Emerald City shared the same hope of finding what they believed they lacked. Together, they walk a clearly marked path, face distractions and detours, overcome challenges, and ultimately discover that what they needed was within them all along. This plot, though wrapped in fantasy, mirrors the leadership journey more than we often realize and becomes a powerful frame for understanding how strategies and tactics guide us toward transformational outcomes.

Just as Dorothy suddenly finds herself in Munchkinland, unsure of where she is or which direction to take, schools often begin a new year needing clarity about their current reality and the future they hope to build. In the movie, Dorothy relies on the guidance of those around her while staying alert to anything that could pull her off course. In the same way, educational leaders benefit from taking time to examine the truth about their school’s performance, resources, culture, and instructional practices, while also acknowledging the challenges that may threaten progress if left unaddressed.

Aspirations like “improve student achievement” or “strengthen school culture” often feel encouraging at first, but eventually lose momentum because the path is not clearly defined. To avoid this, leaders must identify a clear destination, much like the Emerald City, and map out the specific strategies and daily tactics that create the school’s Yellow Brick Road.

Formulating Your Yellow Brick Road

In the same way, Dorothy’s journey becomes clearer once she steps onto the Yellow Brick Road; a school’s progress strengthens when leaders intentionally design the pathway that leads toward their version of the Emerald City, the North Star Metric. In The Wizard of Oz, the road serves as a guide, keeping the characters aligned, focused, and moving in the right direction even when distractions and challenges arise. Schools operate in a similar way. When strategies and tactics are clearly defined, they serve as a steady path that makes the work feel purposeful rather than overwhelming.

A well-crafted strategy provides the overall direction, while the tactics break the journey into manageable, actionable steps that help staff stay grounded in the daily work that matters most. Without this kind of structure, progress can become slow and inconsistent, and detours such as competing initiatives or unclear priorities can easily pull teams off track. Leaders must articulate not only the destination but also the specific sequence of actions that will lead the organization to move forward with greater confidence and unity.

Designing your Yellow Brick Road allows your team to understand the “why,” the “where,” and the “how” of the journey, which transforms a daunting goal into a clear and motivating mission.

Dorothy and the Power of the Right Companions

In the story, Dorothy does not walk the Yellow Brick Road alone. Her progress becomes possible because she travels with companions who help her understand where she is, where she needs to go, and what challenges she must face along the way. In many ways, your school is Dorothy. When the year feels chaotic, or the path ahead becomes unclear, what you need most are the right people beside you, individuals who can help you make sense of your current reality and guide you toward meaningful solutions. This is where Educentric steps in. Our Navigators serve as the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Lion of your journey, offering clarity, structure, and support so you can move with confidence.

With a Navigator partnered with your school, you gain a trusted companion who helps you examine your present conditions, identify what matters most, and outline the precise strategies and tactics that will lead you to your Emerald City. This partnership ensures that you do not just begin the journey but stay on track, overcome obstacles, and ultimately reach the rewarding outcomes your students and staff deserve.

As we close this final edition of the year, we want it to feel like a moment of comfort, much like returning to a familiar story that reminds us we are not walking the journey alone. Educentric is here to support schools and districts that may feel stuck, overwhelmed, or uncertain about how to move toward breakthrough performance. Our core process and model were built to provide clarity, structure, and a pathway that schools can trust, especially when the work feels heavy.

The beginning of a new year offers the perfect opportunity to renew hope for our students by committing to the strategies and tactics that will shape the outcomes they deserve. With the right guidance and a clearly defined Yellow Brick Road, every school has the potential to reach its Emerald City. We are honored to walk alongside you and look forward to supporting your continued success in the year ahead.
